hi,

i picked up a 99 t4 on monday (80k approx on clock - mostly full volvo history - serviced before i picked it up (after i test drove and agreed to buy)- with 12 months mot (UK).
i have noticed that when i stop or am stationary there is a very slight whiff of oil coming through the vents. when i stop the car and get out at the end of the journey there is again a slight whiff of oil about the car.
when i test drove the carafter a whilesmoke was coming from engine bay, however this was due to oil leaking from the oil filler cap. the rubber seal had deteriorated and cracked - so was leaking, this filler cap was replaced.
the place i got it from cleaned up any leakage (well they told me thay did). i have done about 75 miles (its now thursday) could it be it is still burning off some leakage?
any suggestions? at the weekend i plan to take the plastic cover off - clean the engine up and then run it to check for any leaks. there is a warranty on the car but not for very long.
any input would be appreciated. thanks

 

if its not a strong oil smell it could be a bit of oil somewhere that they didnt catch that is burning off...do a visual inspection above and under the engine....

 

thanks for getting back to me, its not a strong smell. for example the passenger in the car yesterday didnt notice it. its only evident when i come to a stop and then its just a whiff of oil. i ve had a check round above, there is nothing that concerns me - justwhat i would expect for a car of this age. i havent noticed any leaks from below - ie after being parked up.

 

seems to be ok - no real smell from vents and smell out side car seems to be reducing.
