Default Steering wheel rubber noise

Hello All

have S40 1.8 2002 with 50kMiles

Fells like rubber squeak/friction inside directly behind the steering wheel. Definitely inside.

Only after short drive (when it's hot) during parking manouvers.

Tried to lubricate - didn't help.

Volvo dealer said - it's airbag rubber ring or something like that (thing directly behind the steering wheel with rubber inside). They said it's nothing to worry about.

Are they right?

This noise is quite annoying to me!

Anybody with similar problems?

Thanks for help

Had the same thing on my 01 s40 when i bought it with 30k miles. It was under warranty at the time so the dealer lubricated it. They new exactly what it was because it is a common problem. Mine is starting to do it again. Dont know how much their fix is. But i think the annoyance of the noise is going to be the only problem with it.

My 2002 S40 does it even tho I changed the steering wheel to a custon piece. It is the small a/b ring that is making the noise and there doesnt seem to be a permanent fix forit. BJ

The steering racks will also make that noise when the Bearing in the top of the rack gets dry.

Thats what the Bulletin from Volvo was for.

It could be that your rubber bushings are loose and needs repair.

Thats the Pain you would need a little Needle syringe to inject grease into it.

As tech was saying , you can lube the top seal in the steering rack, but you'll need a syringe, if this does not cure the problem the steering rack needs to be replaced..
