Default Style/Type of front wheel bearings?

Have 78,000 mi. on a 2007 S40, 2.4i auto trans.
Do I have wheel bearings on the inside of axel or at the end of the axel at the wheel?
And what is the service milage for a wheel bearing re-do?
Getting a wump, wump wump (not a typical grinding sound) sound when I turn R only and it gets more louder at 60-70 MPH. But, not real loud. Tire might be the culprit as it was mounted on a bad rim that I got used. It has a little scallaping on outside.
Thanks!

The wheel bearings are typical sealed front wheel drive bearings. They require no service or change until failure.

For me the typical sound of bearing failure has been the grinding you said yours do not have. And cv shafts have always made a click, click, click as you turn a corner when they are worn out. I agree the noise you describe does sound like a tire problem.

Thanks for the information. I did take a real close look at the tire edge making the racket and it is cupped ever so slightly.
Checking the tire pressure today.
