suspension code???
Are you concerned about finding the exact part numbers for your make/model of S40?
I'd start by looking at the VIN plate to see if there's a six digit number listed... But I've never bothered with that for either of my Volvo's - I just use reputable parts distributors like eeuroparts or FCP Euro or IPD - they are pretty good about finding odd years where there may be a choice (ie 2000s have some different parts from the 2001-2004s).
I also like to poke around volvopartswarehouse.com to view diagrams and see if there are some "trim" level choices. with 2003s being mid-cycle for the platform, I'd be surprised if there's anything to learn.

The reason I was looking for the code is that a few Volvo sites that I have looked at are asking for a suspension code. Also I replaced the struts in the past with a one piece upper mount and had problems, had the struts replaced again by a mechanic and he used a one piece upper mount. As I'm looking at these dealer sites they show that the upper mount is in pieces and I'm thinking that I might have better luck with that setup but I need a suspension code such as (1A, 2A, 1B, 2B....etc).
ok on my 2000 the production plate is on the center of the firewall, on newer models it may be on the B pillar (inside the front door). Look for a metal plate with the VIN and a second series of numbers. The second series includes details like the paint code and suspension code. The IPD web site has a decoder write up.
