Hi All: What can I do to quiet down the suspension on my wife's 2000 V40. When I hit bumps in the road I hear a metal on metal sound coming from the front and the rear. Thanks for ANY ideas!!!
Good possibility, plus any number of bushings can fail to the point where you're getting metal-to-metal contact. This would include the control arms, the sway bar bushings and link bushings, and strut / shock bushings. There are a lot of bushings that can do what you describe. Normally these are fairly easy to spot visually, though it might require pulling the wheels to get a better look.
Gen 1 S40s are notorious for having the ends of the springs break. If it happens in the front, it will most likely also damage the bushing/bearing - which btw, is unique to the 2000s - as the design changed for 2001 to 2004. as noted the 2000's strut bushing/bearing is a weak design and can cause the metal/metal contact.
Here's a couple pics showing the difference between the 2000 S40 and the 2001+ Strut bushing/bearing and a pic of a broken coil spring. Note you can upgrade the 2000s to the 2001 design but there are different part numbers for the strut components (including the strut, spring, bushing/seat/bearing ) so you'd need to build a full 2001+ strut.
