You have not perhaps put her in Winter mode by mistake?
Try pressing the 'W' button a few times and see if that fixes it.

W mode is a steady arrow I believe. The flashing arrow is trouble. I once caused it when I had the front jacked up and ran the car in gear. I had to clear the code with a scanner to make it stop.

i tried to remove the code but after a day it came back... i already found the problem. there was a cut cable coming from the transmission. it fixed the problem of the flashing arrow but now the transmission gives a hard shift when i put it in drive or when stopin going from second to first gear... any advice on the hard shifts?

maybe she is due for a transmission fluid change.
A 'drain and fill'. 3 quarts x 3. Not a power flush
Refilling using a JWS.3309 spec fluid only.

I personally would not add any of those treatment additive products to my newly refreshed ATF.
Let her settle in for a while after the change.
Most report significant improvements with fresh ATF of the correct type after a period of running unless there are other issues causing problems.
If the solenoid etc tested okay as you have said above its likely / hopefully? just due for fresh ATF.
Does the existing fluid look dirty on the tranny dipstick or smell a bit burnt.
Should be a cleanish red colour.

yes the fluid was almost black... thanks for the advice... i also encounter another question... does a 2002 s40 have a transmission filter... i found a few post about volvo 5 speed transmission not using a filter... do you know if that will be true... i will try to check my car during this week... thanks again.

I've not read of anyone changing a filter so I looked at RockAuto and found a part and picture. Has anyone changed this before?

I believe and have read that those in line filters are commonly added by some owners to provide filtration and a longer ATF fluid life.
Its optional so if you can afford the extra parts and time why not.
You should see improved shifting with clean fluid itself after a drain and fill procedure.
