Turbo
Hi,
I have 2001 s-40 Turbo 1.9 with 102,000 miles. For the past 1 month, I notice my car smokes more than usual from the tail pipe.
It only happens when I stop, not while I am driving. I took my car for a oil change and they told me that my turbo is going bad.
I do not know to much about turbo engine. What makes the turbo go bad?
Thanks

if you let your oil go too long without changing you can damage your turbo...your turbo needs an abundant and clean amount of oil to cool itself. also, if your putting crap fuel in your car which is anything below 93 octane you can hurt your turbo.. For smoke coming out it sounds like your air to fuel ratio may not be correct. Your best bet is to go to your dealership and let them diagnose it.
A turbo has an oil feed and return line. As said above, dirty oil can wear out the oil seals inside the center section of the turbo. 100k miles is too soon though. How long do you go between oil changes?
Have you changed your spark plugs lately? If you are burning oil, your plugs should show signs of oil fouling. Take a look at them if you can.
Do you have any oil leaks? Another problem for the S40 is the oil return line leaking from the o-ring where the line enters the block just above the oil pan.
Last take a look at your oxygen sensor. It should be replaced at 100k miles. Especially if it's oil fouled.
