Default Upgrading from 12t to 14t.

So I've got a 2001 S40, I want to replace my 12t with a 14t but I don't know exactly what I'm looking for beyond that. I'm on a budget so I'm thinking about trying to find one from a salvage yard to save money but unfortunately I'm rather novice when it comes turbo's. Basically any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

when it comes to turbos there's two things to consider, the housing (ie different car models have different flanges (straight or angled) - ie how the turbo bolts to the manifold and fits to the downpipe); and the impeller which can have different designs to pump more or less air. The 14t can be had as a direct bolt on but I don't think it was on any US model Gen 1 S40s so you may need to shop eBay or buy a 14T core and put into a 12T housing. With that said, you will also need to get your ECU reprogrammed to allow for higher boost to take advantage of the 14t - or you can just leave the 12T on and get a new ECU program. Some other car models which use the 14T include some of the Volvo S60s and Saab 9-3s but you'd need to research what flange to see if it can bolt into an S40. Take a look on eBay for the 14T to get some ideas and google "TD04L-14T" to see some board posts on upgrades...

Yes you should be able to find a 14T from a S60 model - but that is where you will need to rotate the housing to get it to fit since the intake and exhaust sides will be a bit different between models. Check out some Youtube vids on repairing a TD04 turbo to see how the flanges orient - basically you can loosen a few bolts.

Eu neste momento
até já arranjei um 14t td04l 49377 0600.... . Estava a

the blades need to match the housing, but yes different blade models can be used. Essentially that's the difference between a 16T, 18T, 20T etc. You may want to consult with a turbo parts supplier or rebuild shop to make sure you source parts that will fit. Also keep in mind if you tear open your turbo, you'll want to make sure its rebalanced.
