Well, if you read it on the 'net, it MUST be true. ;-)
Here in the US, we're not fortunate enough to have the diesel variants, but even so - I'm sure if what you suggested is even remotely close to true, we'd have been reading never-ending horror stories about blocks splitting (pretty traumatic kind of failure, after all). I might have missed one or two, but don't recall seeing ANY reports of that happening, and would be dollars to donuts that if it does happen, it's exceedingly rare.
Or maybe you heard it from a "confused owner" of a Vovlo - one thing that CAN happen is the CYLINDER HEAD can crack if the car seriously overheats.

Hi, no my local Volvo garage told me this today, he has seen 30+ cars from 2013 plates with this problem, it's the french engine that Ford put into their cars, a new engine is worth more than the car, so we will just have to be careful and hope it never happens
OK, so a Volvo garage has seen this happen to a grand total of about three cars a year. That's gotta be some small fraction of one percent of the cars they see, and I'll bet dollars to donuts that the owners of those "split block cars" did something dumb like not running antifreeze or seriously overheating them.
Short story - worry more about getting hit by a meteor. ;-)
