Hi i have a 2005 volvo s40 2.4i (81k miles) that i just bought a week ago and it has a ticking noise that i cant tell if its coming from the bottom of the motor or the top, its always ticking fast whether idling or stopped, sometimes you can barely hear it but sometimes the noise increases.

im still on the warranty so im trying to figure out if its a big issue or something small.

any suggestions please?

 

If its on a warranty you should have the dealer investigate and resolve the noises cause for you.
Fiddling about with it yourself first will give them an opportunity to deny responsibility by claiming you caused the problem.

 

I'm with Difflock. Also, a video of the sound would help us understand what you are concerned with.

 

Buy a cheap mechanics stethoscope and track the noise down. Ticking can be many things from mild to serious.
