Default Well it's official, my 2005 S40 is dead

Got a call from the dealership and the engine is badyl damaged and mostly prob the insurance company will total it since the repairs are about 6-7k.

I have had this car for 1.3 years only. Apart from the engine, everything else works on tis car. I guess i'll buy it back from the insurance co and take it apart to sell as parts.

O2 Sensors, AC compressor, New power steering pump and most of all, last week it just spend about $550 on new tires.

I'm bummed

Man that sucks. Have you thought about trying to find a used engine to put in it?

Wow, my condolences....and I'm sure it hurt, having invested in those replacement parts....'really think you ought to look around, maybe online, for something smashed up/totalled in the side or rear, but with a clean engine...Oh, and go somewhere else other than the dealer about installation....Good thing you're among friends here at Volvo Forums who can maybe steer you in the right direction....Good luck.

News update. Apparently there was a big hole in the oil pan that's now on top of the water pump breaking. So tomorrow the dealership will remove the oil pan to see if the oil draind before or after the engine stopped.

Initially everything was pointing to the water pump that broke and that got the timing belt loose. But now the insurnace appraiser is wondering what could have gotten the tiing belt loose; it's not broken.

So I will keep you guys posted on what they find. They still find it puzzling the the break in the oil pan is straight and not curved in (if it was hit from the bottom).

Ok it gets stranger:

- After teh inspection when the oil pan was removed, the bearings etc were inspected and they are all good. The conclusion is that the hole happened after the car stopped but no one can tell where or how. It's a clear hole no bent inwards or outwards. Vandalism of some kind.

- Next is the cylinder leakage test wehre the dealership told me that this will determine if I have any bent heads or valve damage. Says if the leak is less than 10%, there is no damage.

If there is no damage, then, I will need an oil pan, water pump and timing belt. For around $1500. Does this sound too much?

Ok here goes the estimated cost from the dealer himself. You guy lets me know if that sounds fair.

1) No firm idea until the engine is disassembled, I would say between $1200 - $1900, but need to remove the cylinder head for inspection. I asked him a ball park for repairs on the valve, cylinder head etc. Cylinder 3-5 show 80% leakage and cylinder 1-2 show no leakage at all. He said that if there is a bent, the machine shop could fix it (so im assuming it would be cheaper?)

2) Range is $900-1100 depending on what is damaged/missing, someone has removed parts, assuming dealer, may be in the car? Thats to replace the timing belt and water pump

3) Complete job, $680 + the $350 in teardown and engine inspection time you had previously authorized. This one is to replace the oil pan. The $350 was to remove it and inspect the bearings but it's still off. Shouldn't he at least apply some of the $350 towards my repair???

4) Upper engine diagnostic time, checking for valve damage yesterday was $318 you had previously authorized. Cylinder leak test with boroscope. Does this really cost this much to do??

I am selling an S40 engine out of a 2000. I dont know if it will fit your car, but buying this would probably save you hundreds over putting all that labor and parts into your car.

Appreciate the offer man but I already had the valves and cylinder head worked on.

I just have to now debate with the owner of the dealership who quoted me a worst case scenario of $4300 but called me last thursday telling me now its $5300. So since he likes to talk in circle, he will probably tell me how it took him half a day to remove the exhaust manifold , how great he is and test me.

He doesnt know I'm also testing his honesty at the same time. I have his email with a worst case scenario. So i will just see waht excuses he comes up with Maybe this week he will come up with $6000 and then next week $7000.
