Default What did I get myself into? Help

Hi everyone I am new to the volvo world..here is my story...what did I get myself into.

My sister in law had a 2006 Volvo S40 2.4i in excellent condition with 140k kms. Went to get her brakes done and when she picked up the car it would not start. She left it at the garage.
1. One day at the garage. they found the pass side carpet wet. concerned about the wires.
2. Car was towed to Volvo dealership where they spent 14 hours working on the car. They were thinking it could be the CEM but wanted to work on the car more to be sure. They told her she was at 1000$ labour!!!! She decided she would scrap the car for 600$ and pay them the difference of 400$. This is where I come in.

So I decided to take the car off her hands, pay the 1000$ and tow the car to my regular garage. 3 days later. My mechanic had tested everything possible and we changed the ignition switch...still the car would not start or turn over. Finally he concluded it was the CEM but that would have to be done at volvo. Paid him 540$ for the ignition switch and 3 hours labour.

I then got the car towed to Volvo today and changed the CEM....1100$ plus 70 for the software and 129 for 1 hour labour totaling 1500$ with tax!!!!

The car is not turning over but will not start. They tell me its either the wire harness going to the fuel pump or its is a faulty fuel pump...If it is the pump we are talking 459 for the pump (apparently you can only get this at the dealer??) and 3 hours labour so pretty much another 1000$. At that point I will be in for 4100$ for the car and I still am not sure if it will start then!!!

Am I crazy? Is this possible to have all happened at the same time? If I do get this car running do I sell it or keep it because of all the new parts is has? I am looking for some opinions as I am new to Volvo. I love how the car looks which is why I took the gamble but I am now in over my head. Your input and comments will be so very much appreciated.

Your story is the kind that makes dealers and garages look so bad. Did anyone ever test anything before replacing it? Good grief. It's either the this or the that? Makes me cringe. I see people making a money grab which makes me ill. I hope I'm being too cynical and it's not true.

Once they have enough of your money you should sell it and buy a newer one. The Volvo is 10 years old and things will break so if you don't do your own work you will always be vulnerable to problems as you describe above. JMHO
