Default 01 S60 2.4T has air leak sound inside

It sounds like air is escaping out of the left upper vent of my dash. When I engage the brake it immediately quits. It soulds like something is moving behind the radio/heat/air panel that may be opening or closing this air flow.

Does this make any sense to anyone? I thought there was a thread on something like this before, but I cannot find it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

no such thing as a 01 2.5t :P (i think you mean 2.4t!)

that said since it is stopping as soon as you hit the brakes it is probably your brake booster (fairly common failure) BUT check around your pedals it may be a loose rubber seal.

Thanks for your imput. If there is a failure with the brake booster, why would it make that noise? Is air actually escaping?

I corrected my title since I am not sure why I put the 5. At any rate, I already am a girl and I don't know much about cars, so stating my car as a model that doesn't exist is NOT helping my case!

My brake booster is on it's way out and there is a hissing sound that goes away when I depress the brake pedal. It's gotten worse now (now it's a high-pitched whine), but I can't afford the $500 for a new brake booster at the moment....

haha no problem Cass - yes when your brake booster fails, air (albeit a tiny amount) is escaping the vacuum system.

Check those rubber gaskets first, because they have been known to come loose frequently (and the fix is FREE and nothing to worry about!).

Thanks. Good advice. It is obnoxious and people riding with me think my car has ghosts or is a big pile of crap and I do not appreciate that!

ETA: I apparently don't know how to edit the thread title. Sorry.
