Default '01 S60 70k miles transmission issues, questions....

Last week I could have sworn that it was taking a little longer for my car to shift gears. It was one of those elusive things and I wasn't sure.

Today, driving to work, I feel the notorious "bump" and think "oh-oh" then I feel a few more bumps. Okay, something is going on.

Am I doomed to receive the news of a failing transmission?

WHERE is the darn dipstick to check the transmission fluid level?

Now I am remembering that I noticed a puddle of "fluid" at the end of my driveway a few weeks ago. It "dried" into something that was obviously oil based (it stained the concrete). Could it be possible that the "bolt" (whatever it is) that keeps my transmission fluid "in" came out and the transmission fluid leaked at the end of my driveway? Could I drive around without transmission oil for a few weeks? Just curious. Need to check the transmission fluid level first.

Question - the nearest Volvo delaer is 50 miles away...think I will make it over there?

Yikes...we are leaving for vacation on Sat and have to take my car because of the luggage....figures....

with the age on the car, the trans fluid should be exchanged either by several drain and fills or a flush. Mobil 3309 is the fluid, JWS 3309 oil spec. Toyota has it called T1V. $5 a quart or so.

the dipstick for the trans is front engine, driverside with a yellow tab on it. Hidden under a bunch of wires and tubes. You can find it pretty easily though if you search for it.

Identify the oil leakage. A big puddle is not good at all. Forget the dealership, surely you must know of a local repair place to look at it?

Those f-ing Volvo people need to burn in hell!

Dude would not tell me exactly where the transmission dipstick was, other than to say "it's on the drivers side, down low, behind this, that and the other" He was so evasive I actually asked him "do I need to get on the ground to get at it? am I going to get dirty trying to find it?" because I needed more info on Where TF it was.

Dude then went on and told me that the transmission oil area is "encased" and that, even if I wanted to add transmission oil, the area was not designed for anyone other than a volvo service person to access and, even if I did want to try, the transmission fluid is special and I can only get it from Volvo and when do I want to bring it in?

I get to the local shop that works on Volvo's and they pop the hood and pull the dipstick, that is completely in plain sight...and tell me that Volvo was making the addition of transmission fluid a lot harder than it really is.

Anyways, we ran diagnostics on the car and nothing came back. They did tell me that my engine mount (not block) was cracked and that maybe the movement of the motor was what I was really felling when I thought I felt the gears slip.

My transmission oil is closer to brown than red/pink, so I am going to have that changed on Friday and they say it's $220 out the door for the motor mount replacement. Good deal?

Am I allowed to feel secure that, since diagnostics revealed no codes, there really is no problem with the car?

If it's the top engine mount, and you can easily see that one on top of the engine, it's about $50 for the part. Check with www.fcpgroton.com.

Regarding the trans oil. If you are dealing with a guy that knows the 5 speed auto's take JWS 3309, then hopefully he uses the Toyota fluid, or Mobil 3309. I wouldn't put anything else in there.

If he does a flush it takes about 12/15 quarts to do. If a drain and fill you have to do it about three time in succession, and it takes 3.5 quart per time to do it. You can easily access the fill tube by removing the yellow dip stick, and getting a long flexible tube to fit inside the fill tube ID. To drain the fluid, under the car, you simply need a socket to remove the hex bolt off the trans. It's on there horizontally if you will instead of straight down.

Dealers charge $450 for a flush, $125 for a drain and fill (same as an oil change) so beware. If your guy does the mount and the fluid if it's the correct stuff, then it's a good deal.
