I think this may be what is going on with mine as I've done everything else. Which motor mounts were done, if you know? The upper engine stabilizer mount?

I'll have to check with the shop as I'm not sure of the terminology. I know it's located rearward, or aft for us sailors.

I just checked the bill and it says it was an upper mount, and I know it was rearward. I think it would be the upper stabilizer mount.

Thanks - that's the one I kinda figured may be related to the issue. I'll give that one a shot.

Default 2002 S60 tranny AW55-50 issues 5spd geartronic

My car is at an indy shop now. Was having problems with Reverse to drive delayed engagement and 2nd to 3rd, engine revs and harsh engagement.

Top engine mount replaced, fluid changed. no change in symptoms. My fingers are crossed...

Default Volvo 01 S60 transmission problems

I feel your pain Ecoughlin. I'm experiencing the same transmission problems with my 01 S60 that I just bought. Went to an independent and they recommend a rebuild $1500-2800. I haven't tried a software update (not sure if its up to date), flush (ATF doesn't look terrible, its still red) or replacing the transmission mounts. I want to know if I should go ahead and get the transmission rebuilt or at least attempt the cheaper fixes?

I would love to know if you or anyone was able to save their '01 transmission? I have 121,000 miles.

Also, what are people's thoughts on getting the rebuilt transmission from a Volvo Dealer, having your transmission rebuilt at a transmission shop or trying to get a used transmision from an older model installed?

After driving mine for a while post-replacement of the upper engine mount, I think this just alleviated some of the issue. It still flares, especially from second to third, but when it kicks into gear there isn't as much of a jerk. Hope it's the software update or the B4 servo cover and not something pricier.

Definitely try the cheaper fixes first. You can order the B4 Servo cover and Upper torque mount (trans. mount) from IPD. For fluid, get a case of Type IV from your local Toyota dealer. It's about $75 for a case and you'll have enough for 3 drain/fills.

My only hope is that there is a software update. Otherwise I've done everything else. I'll just keep driving it until something happens.....

Default Tranny issues 2002 S60 AWD AW55-50 5 spd.

Thanks in advance for support and ideas. The New to me 2002 S60 was just picked up from the shop. the tranny issues are delay shifting from reverse to drive, and harsh engagement. Shift flares from 2nd to 3rd (missed shifts and harsh engagements.) The indy shop flashed the tranny. I picked up the car today and have already experienced the delay shifting from reverse to drive.

So far tranny flushed, Flashed, top engine mount replaced.

Next step?

Eric

Aisin-Warner AW55-50SN valve body replacement in 2002 V70-XC

im going to try this when I get some money saved, 55-50 is same as 55-51 except 51 has a slighlty different differential for AWD

also these two videos show rebuilding a 55-51, he mentions the 55-51 valve body gasket has a vent hole, but Id send the valve body to be rebuilt by someone else, just taking it out and putting it in is something I could do.

Default Transmission nightmare

Spent 100 bucks, got a full dealer report: Delayed harsh drive and reverse engagements, 2-3 shift slippage and other erratic behaviour, fluid is clean and no codes stored in TCM. Valve body failure, this is a common valve body wear issue with the spool valves. Recommend replacing the transmission, does not think other fixes will work. $4,200.

Spoke to alot of the other Volvo independents here in Denver and they couldn't recommend anywhere to get the transmission rebuilt, other than the Dealer fix. I had one transmission place look at it, quoted me $1500-$2800, but didn't really give me any idea what they would do and what their success rate was like.

I don't have the know-how, tools or workshop to try something as complicated as a valve body repair. I'm just going to drive the car as little as possible (the weather's getting better and I have my push bike!) either until the transmission dies or I have saved the money for the rebuilt transmission.

The shifting only seems to get really bad when the transmission fluid is hot. So fingers crossed it last six months. I've already put so much money into this car, my wife is going to suffocate me with a pillow in my sleep when I tell her this! I wish I bought a Mercedes, my father-in-law has 220,000 miles on his transmission, never changed the ATF!

Has anyone tried using a tranny from a car in a junk yard? I found this website with some fairly cheap trannys and free shipping. Auto Parts, Car Parts, Truck Parts - Discount Auto, Car & Truck Parts - Auto Parts Fair

your only option is a volvo rebuilt tranny.

'01 and '02 auto trannies are crappy and have a high failure rate, and buying a used one from the wreck yard won't save you any money, because it will fail soon afterwards.

Buying parts from salvage yards is a gamble but you may get lucky. I bought a used tranny from a junk yard near our place and selected a wrecked car, dismantled by a mecahnic friend and it has logged over 50k miles by now and still working perfect. Ordering a tranny over the internet is a diff. story. They may claim the wrecked car has so and so miles but in reality, its got way more miles than stated.

B4 Servo Cover Update

" The AW55-50/51SN (5 speed) automatic transmissions in 2001-2002 models have an issue with shift “flares” and other odd symptoms related to shifting in and out of 3rd gear. Usually, this is exhibited by a “missed” shift from 2nd to 3rd gear on a random basis.

This B4 servo cover update can solve these symptoms in most cases. Other times, it may take a software update or the B4 problem has gone on too long and damaged the transmission (hard gear engagements, etc.)

Volvo has changed the design of this cover multiple times. There are numerous bulletins regarding it. The replacement cover is stock on later cars.

The irony is that this inexpensive part can save someone from a costly transmission replacement."

- Software updates. These need to be done at the dealer. Make sure you have the latest software update.

- Transmission mount.

Heavy Duty Polyurethane Transmission Mount

I've done the B4 servo cover, transmission mount and the drain & fill 3 times on my '01 T5 and it's improved a lot but I still get the clunk/delay into Drive from P or R and harder shifts from1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd about 70% of the time. It's better when it's warmer out. I need to get the software updates checked. Since it's intermittant and gets better with warm weather, I have a strong feeling it's something else. If it was constant then I'd look into the tranny.
I have an '06 S60 T5 with 62K miles. I'm getting the "Transmission Service Required" and the check engine light after the tranny rebuild and the valve body replaced. The indy shop cleared the code (P0503) but it immediately comes back. Supposedly the code means "transmission speed sensor", whatever that is. I also have extremely hard downshifts from 2nd to 1st and unexplained occassional slippage. What's the speed sensor?
