Default 2002 S60 Coolant Flush and Change

I have always done this myself in prior vehicles. I'm doing my own oil changes now and would like to tackle this one too.

I've looked around on my S60 and it does not appear obvious to me where the drain is. The dealers wants $180 to do this.

Does anyone have a nice "how to" link on how to do this? Need to do the same for my wifes 2003 XC70.

Thanks

The S60 is the same as your wifes car. Under the car towards the drivers side look for a hole in the plastic protection guide that is on the bottom. Up there is the dran plug. A 13MM deep socket will get it loose and it will drain. Just remember to remove the bottle cap.

Thanks, yup, our Volvos have the same engine.

Drain it, flush it, fill it back up, right? Anything special about this engines systems where I must flush it with a certain brand and then use a certain brand/kind of coolant? I have always used Preston flush/coolant in our other cars.

Thanks

That coolant is fine.
The only other thing is usually once you fill it and drive it you will have to top it back off. Sometimes they are hard to burp.
Sometimes it will take about 6 miles for it to burp.

I see 1 hole in that area. One seems to have what looks like a 1-2" tube coming down, about the diameter of a pencil. Is this it? It appears to be directly under the radiator on the drivers side. A regular 13mm will not do anything, and I cannot see up into the hole far enough to see if there is a nut/pug there.

Thanks

Great, thanks, just checking before I go out and purchase a 13mm deep socket.

Thanks, you have saved us the $360 for the 2 at the dealer, less the costs of the antifreeze/flush.

I should note the manual states you should never have to change the coolant while the dealer started pushing this at 60K miles. Both cars have 75K on them now so I thought it was best if I do them now.

The Dealer will change it every 30K.
That is normally part of a 30,000 mile service.
