Default 2002 Volvo s60 2.4T steering wheel issues???

First off I would like to say hello to everyone, i just bought my first volvo today! I also became a member of this wonderful forum that i didnt even know existed! So here is the deal. I just bought a 2002 Volvo S60 2.4T i thought it was a great deal at 5,500 with tax title and plates. (96,000 Miles) So in my excitement of all the luxury of this car and cool things that it could do i was not paying attention before i bought it. For some reason there is a SRS message on the dash, the horn will not work, and none of the steering controls will work (or light up). I think i checked all the fuses? and i also pulled the airbag out to verify all the connections were in place which they were. The car has never been in a wreck from what i know of but i do know the guy said he replaced the gauge cluster because it had an issue? Has anyone had an issue with this or have Any clue at all what might be wrong? Im at my wits end... I also tried searching the forum with no results :-( Thank you to everyone in advance!!!!

::EDIT:: By steering controls i mean the radio controls, cruise controls, and horn on the steering wheel itself NOT the ones on the column those work fine

Welcome to the forum.

You'll soon learn that most of the electronics in these Volvo's are controlled by electronic modules. If a module was replaced that controls those functions on your steering wheel, it may need to be re-programmed by the dealer.

I had the "SRS service required" message just recently and I caused it when I pulled one of the fuses. Had to be taken to the dealer to re-set.

I am in the same situation 2002 s60 2.4t (93,000 miles, paid $6,500) with air bag light on and no cruise control, horn or steering wheel radio controls working. I brought it to the dealer and they gave me a complimentary 1 hr SRS diagnosis on 3/7/11. They came back with too high resistance stage 1 and too high resistance stage 2 on reel. Recommended replacing clock spring. Having that replaced tomorrow, still looking for issue with horn and steering wheel controls. Will let you know how I make out.

I appreciate it. I'm debating on replacing the clock spring also. From what I understand is the clock spring also controls the horn and controls

Default new clock spring

New used clock spring installed today. Have to go to dealer to reset airbag light and see if there is still a fault. Cruise control, radio controls and horn still not working. Time to get out multimeter and spend some time myself with wiring diagram on that issue. Let me know if you find anything on your end.

Well on my end I had my code wiped today. And the idiot forgot to tell me what it was so yay.... On the other hand it didn't fix my wheel issue. So now I am going to attempt to put in a new clock spring. I'll remember to pull the battery first so I don't throw a code and pay another 120. Lol. I'll give you an update once I find out more. There's a local yard that has late model volvos out here CHEAP. 75.00 for the whole steering collumn with airbag and ignition with keys.

Checked some other sites on this issue last night. Someone recommended disconnecting battery and holding the the two leads to the car together for 15 seconds then reconnecting to battery (+) first. they mentioned that this should reset the swm (steering wheel module) and the controls should work again. If there is an issue with the swm, the problem will come back. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, plan on this weekend while working on the car.

Isn't the swm in all reality just a plastic jumper box? I know it's located in the passenger kickpanel I think?

took airbag off, steering wheel off, checked connections, nothing out of the ordinary. Did find that the telescoping was totally jammed. Still no horn, cruise control or radio controls on steering wheel. Air bag light still on. Havent had a chance to go back to dealer to put on VADIS. Any luck on your end Hybrid???

Well. I haven't had time yet to do much. I know I had the code clearned and it hasnot returned. But still no controls..... So I'm not sure. I think this Saturday I'm going to pull it all apart and check it with a voltmeter. See if I can find power actually making it to the switches. Then I'll look at the swm. I'll update you afterwards on what I find

Well just for an update for everyone. It did end up being the clock spring. That was the root of all my problems. I finally had time to change it out yesterday. Thank you to everyone for all the advice!!! And z I wish you the best of luck. It may be your steering wheel module behind the clock spring. If it is let me know. I have an extra one that's good.

Hello Everyone,
Did you need a software upload from Volvo dealership? Im having same issue with my 1999 S80 T6. The clock spring has to be replaced but Im hoping not the steering control module. Horn and radio controls on steering dont work and my airbag light is on.

Hey everyone, sorry i completely forgot to respond or tell my answer. So here is what i found. First and foremost, it was the clock spring. I couldent really afford the new part at the time, so i went to our local junkyard and was able to find a matching s60, i pulled the clock spring out of that, swapped it into my car, and voila! all my problems were taken care of aside of my airbag light, which i took the car to a local volvo repair shop and they were able to clear it. No problems since. I highly suggest giving that a shot!

How much did the dealer charge you to reset the SRS code?

so I am also new with the brand. About a year with a 2003 s60 non-turbo.i just learned about what they call the clock ribbon or spring. It technically has nothing to do with a clock. But it is a ribbon wire that controls damn near every thing on the wheel, like stereo controls, horn, cruise control, etc. It is a wire that wraps around the steering column 20-30 times and connects all the steering wheel controls to the rest of the vehicle. They say it can break or wear out. In going out now to go check mine due to stereo stations changing by them selves. And no lights on the dash. So that is just another new guys might be the answer info. Hope it helps. Oh and there is a module not many know about. The steering column control module. It's evasive. I have yet to find a video on YouTube about it, or even info on its Location. Good luck
