I Have an 02 Volvo s60 t5 With The triptronic Transmission.

Reverse Gear And Park Work Fine Along With First And Second Gear.

My Problem is getting into 3rd, 4th and 5th gear In Both Tiptronic mode and Drive It Will Not Shift Past Second Gear.

The Car Has 98,000 Miles And The Transmission Fluid Looks Fine It Is Not Dark Nor' Is it Low

I Have Heard That There Are Issuses with the Transmission on this year and model. I Also Know That there is an update from the dealer that i can get. Im Pretty Sure The Update is not going to fix the problem. So My Second option From What i have read is to Replace The Complete Valve Body in the Transmission.

Has anyone else had this problem?

If so, What did you do to resolve it besides replacing the transmission. I Know That It Does not Need Replacing and it seems like a Mechanical Failure of some sort. The Transmission Does not Clunk in gears or make Any Type Of Whining Noises ( It Just Will Not Go Into the higher gears)

It could be a valve body or solenoid issue. Have you had the codes pulled?

 

where can i get the codes pulled from? Or what do i need to pull the codes? The TCU (transmission control unit) will have them in it correct?? My Car Does not have any CEL's and the only message i have is that the traction control needs servicing

 

You will need a scanner that can read tranny codes. But I will also bet the ABS module is bad.

 

The ABS module will be for the traction control STaying off correct? As for the Scanner that Reads Transmission codes. Which one should i get? do they have it at an auto parts store?

The scanner you will need a pretty pricey one. Most just read engine codes only.

The ABS module is in a network with the entire car.
Also the CEM gets into from the engine,tranny, and ABS module to set everything while driving. It is possible the ABS module can affect the tranny when it is bad.

 

Okay What Would The CEM (Central Electric Module) Have To Do With it? This Is Located on the The Left side of the Car behind The Dash Correct?

Also Any Advice on fixing the abs module or replacing it?

Where is the ABS Module located and Where would i be able to get one?

Do You know of anyone with the same problem? And what it may have taken to fix it. I Need To Do More Re-search before i start replacing parts.

The Cem would have noting to do with it. I said Cem because it is a main computer. But my point was that one computer messing up can screw the entire car up.

Now I Am Assuming That This Would not Cause The problem With the transmission.

The Person That Made The Write Up On The ABS Module Removal Stated that people that Send their Nodules in for repair DO Drive their Cars without them. That Gives Me Reason To Believe That There Would Be no Connection With The Traction Control Light Stuck on (bad ABS Module) and The Car Not Having 3 Final Gears. Right?

You are An Admin on this site. Have You Ever seen something like this?

Since I am Not a Volvo Specialist I Need Some Advice On These Cars before i Change out the wrong Parts. I Am Definately going to fix the ABS module But After I Get This Gear Problem Fixed.

Do You Also Have A List Of Things That The Volvo Dealer Should Do For Free?
Such as Software Upgrades (I Am Assuming They Are Free) and The ETM (electronic Throttle Module) Extended Warranty to 10 years or 200k miles. That is all i know. I Have Read There are Recalls on transmission parts Such as the valve body. but i have yet to confirm that.

 

(update) The Car is in the Shop Getting Diagnosed. The Car Had One Code Stored In The TCU But it did not specify which code was being stored.

I Should Get Some Results in The Next Hour Or So . I Will keep You Updated as this thread may help someone in the near future.

 

I have seen bad ABS modules shut the entire car down.

Most of the tranny software is not free they charge to install it.

I doubt it is stopping the last 3 gears from working.

I have seen many wacky things with these cars.

I hope it is a good update you get from the shop.

 

No good updates... They are telling me that The Clutches for the final three gears are bad. I seriously Doubt that. But i am looking to buy a used transmission for the car. I do not have the money to buy a new one or get it re-built. I wish i did. but at the moment that is not an option.
I just pulled out the entire engine and drivetrain assemby To replace the transmission. So, If you have anyone or know anybody that has a spare one laying around that would be awesome. There are not any on ebay that are in my price range. i am trying to spend less than 700.00 shipped. and that is pushing it.

I also need the bracket that holds the power steering pump a/c compressor and alternator as it broke while i was pulling the engine out
