Unhappy 2004 volvo 26 - oil consumption

i have a 2004 volvo s60 non turbo... car is running great. idles beautifully, still has great power, and gas milage is still great. but the last 6 months ive noticed that ive been needing to add about a 1/4 quart of oil per week. I see no visible signs of oil lose anywhere and i dont smell any oil burnig or have any exhust smoking. i checked and changed the spark plugs and they had no unusual wear or deposites on them. Would like to know if anyone has come across this issue and if there are any tips..

thank you

I'm no mechanic but my old 850 had the same problem. Turned out it was the crankcase. I think there is a sponge type thing in there that sometimes only needs to be cleaned or replaced. At one point I let it go too long and oil was splattered everywhere under the hood. All it took was a new sponge. But I was pouring oil in after a 20 minute hwy. drive...that's how much that thing would burn. Worth a look.

How many miles on engine? how many miles of driving does that 1/4 quart of oil equate to? what weight oil are you running? Have you had the car since new? or know its service history? I have seen several vehicles that burn oil and not had any of the side effects you mention not having, though on one that burned about a quart of oil every 100 miles you could see a light haze in the rear view mirror when there were headlights behind you at night, during the day you could not see it....it turned out to have the wrong rings but it ran great and had good compression.(it actually got better gas mileage, but you had to stop and put oil in before you stopped for gas...) I would check the crankcase/pcv ventilation system. But if you don't find anything and aren't interested in rebuilding your engine it may well be your rings/cylinder/valve guides.... you could try going to a heavier oil or one of those high mileage engine oils and see if that helps
