Default 2014 S60 Oil Change Interval

The manual recommends 10k oil changes. Having grown up in the era of 5-7.5k mile oil changes, this sounds a bit hard to believe as far as wanting to maintain maximal engine life. Knowing how modern engines and oils are designed, what is the professional opinion on this? Would you recommend the oil be changed at the 7,500 mile mark instead of the manufacturer recommended 10,000? I have traditionally used OEM oil filters and full synthetic oil.

Working on these cars everyday not many purple drive their vehicles 10,000 miles in one year which is the recommended intervals. You don't have to worry about doing your own oil change for 4 years or 40,000 miles unless you have safe and secure which extends it.

Maintenance intervals should be based as much on your personal goal for the vehicle as it is the manufacturers recommendation, but Volvo specifies 5W30 full synthetic, which easily warrants the 10K interval. Heck, compared to the previous 7500K interval for dino oil it is downright aggressive. Back to your personal goals. If you trade off every 150K miles or less the factory recommendation is fine. If you are shooting for 300K+ then adjust accordingly like maybe back to the 7500K interval with the synthetic. The biggest issue with 10K intervals though is tire rotations. Those really need to happen every 5-6K or you risk cupped tires and shortened life.

Perhaps newer vehicles has mixture burning technologies that make them contaminate less the engine oil, and create less sludge that before. And also, one has to define what is 'full' synthetic oils, most oils on the market are a blend of synthetic and mineral components. By the past, Volvo, and not only them, recommended no transmission fluid replacement for vehicle lifetime. They were wrong, and you correct me, but they still don't recommend replacing the transmission fluid.

To be safe, depending on the typical trips length I would change the engine oil at 10000 miles when doing mostly highway driving, and at 6000 miles when doing mostly city & short distances driving. Adjust the oil change interval for anything in between.

Under no circumstance should you go beyond 10k miles unless you want to void the warranty on the engine.

Agree with previous poster, as long as the car is in warranty, keep the oil change below 10000miles. I've edited my post.

Traded in the '05 s40 with 220k miles. After warranty, it went ~10k miles between oil changes with synthetic.
Plan to keep doing the 10k with the '13 s60 as well
