Question 2015 Volvo S60 T5 can't shift gears

Hi.
My parents own a 2015 Volvo S60 T5, yesterday it developed a problem. When trying to shift gears the car doesn't register them. The car shows that it's in P, even after you've shifted into D, N, and so on. Also before when shifting gears there used to be slight resistance, you could feel the car going into gear, but now it feels like the gear lever is floating in the air. We think it could be something related to the gear linkage, what do you think?

When you shift it out of park, is the gear actually changing? So if you shifted it from park, you should be able to roll in neural. If the gear doesn't actually change, it possible the linking from the shifter to the transmission broke. With the lack of resistance, the broken link seems to be the issue. Usually it breaks right at the transmission. The plastic bushing inside ends up wearing out. Some cars you can replace just the bushing. I attached a picture below of what it will look like, ignore the red circle, this is just an image from google. This image is from a 2004 S60R but the general shape/concept is the same. a cable going to a hinged piece of metal on the transmission. I think it will be on the top and you should be able to see it by popping the hood.
