Default 5w30 oil for Volvo s60

Last year I bought my very first car. it is volvo s60 2002, 96kWh 2.4D. I was completely new at that time, and after buying the car I decided to change all my oils and filters. I knew that in car specs it is recommended to use 0w30 engine oil. When I drove to a mechanic and ask for changing oil, I didn't tell him what oil to put, cause I guessed that he knows better than I do. So he used 5w30 synthetic oil.

Now, year after, I decided to change my oil, I went to the shop and showed what oil do I need, they told me that correct oil is 0w30 for my model and told that if I use 5w30 then I would have big problems someday. I didn't buy anything, they had 0w30 4 liters oil canister for 48 euros. I noticed that 0w30 is more expensive than 5w30, so what I want to ask, is it really that bad to use 5w30 oil or did they only wanted to sell me a more expensive oil?

I live in area where in summer temperature can rise up to 30degrees of celsius, and -20 degrees in a winter.

Thank you.

what does your owners manual say? Most offer a range of temperatures for a given oil viscosity, and -20C is certainly in the use range for 5-30. 0w30 is a tad bit more viscous at sub zero temps. Note the petrol engines spec 10w30 and 5w30 for colder climates.
