Default ABS problem.

I have a 2006 s60 2.5T and the brakes work great when applying normal braking pressure however theres a lot of snow right now and when the ABS kicks in the brakes make a horrible grinding noise. So work perfect with no ABS, no grinding and efficient braking but then the ABS make me cringe every time they engage. Any ideas?

What you are likely hearing is normal ABS system operation.
If the noise seems to be coming from the engine compartment/front area of the car rather than from the wheels then it is most likely the ABS system operating. Check the owners manual for ABS operation.

the noise means at that moment the wheel it's on a slippery surface and the abs kick in to keep the wheel from locking. you will hear similar noise when traction control kicks in, again on slippery surfaces.
