Automatic transmission fluid
Hi I have 2012 Volvo S60 drive.I was wondering can I change the automatic transmission fluid.I heard you don't have too as its meant to last a lifetime. My Volvo S60 has a 1.6 Peugeot automatic diesel engine in it if that helps. Thanks if anyone can help
tons of opinions on whether ATF is truly a lifetime fluid. Most will say its a good idea to freshen periodically as it will break down over time. First thing to do is a dipstick check by wiping the fluid onto a clean white cloth or paper towel. Red means is probably fresh, reddish brown means its in good shape, brown or black means its already broken down. If its brown/black and smells burnt, there's some damage that has probably already happened and you would want to drain the fluid through filter paper to see if any chunky bits of clutch are coming out (yikes!) and then drop the plan to clean out any debris. For regular service most DIY service people do a drain/fill every 50K or 100K miles (I am in the 100K camp). A drain fill is where you drain out about 2 or 3 quarts then refill, run the car, drain again until you've done 3-4 cycles. that will get you to about 80-90% fresh (typically about 12 quarts to do so). Key thing is to make sure you use the correct fluid for your transmission model. Also check Youtube for the drain/fill method appropriate to your car. most 4/5 speed autos simply have a dipstick and drain plug but some of the newer 6 speeds actually use an oil fill tube and a temperature sensor to set the oil level (requires a scanner tool to read the transmission temperature).
