Default Bad Gas Mileage? Whistling Noise? Turbo Boost Solenoid?

Hi all,
I'm a So-Cal resident who owns a 2001 Volvo S60 2.4T. I bought the car with 111k in August of 2013 and now I'm around 122k. I mostly commute from Whittier to Long Beach everyday so that explains the miles. When I originally bought the car, it had 1 previous owner and was well maintained getting roughly 23 miles a gallon. After 2 oil changes, spark plugs, serpentine belt, and some other minor repairs, I now get roughly 17-18 miles a gallon. The car also makes a whistling noise that resonates with the sound of the engine, going up when I accelrate and down when I deccelerate. My mechanic told me that my temperature sensor needs to be changed as well as my Turbo Boost Solenoid. Can these account for poor gas mileage? If not, how can I improve my gas mileage? Below is a link to the Boost Solenoid that needs to be changed. Your opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like you drive mostly highway, how bad is the traffic?
You should be getting better MPGs than 17-18. I drive everyday 92 miles round trip on my 05 s60 2.5t and I get 28mpg when I do the math.

I drive about 70 miles round trip everyday. In the morning, traffic isn't too bad. Going back home, traffic gets a little heavy. I usually take the 605 North and South. I don't think bad traffic would bring me down so much though.

Are you going off with what the dashboard computer is estimating or are you doing the math? I noticed my onboard computer always shows 2mpg less.

Default Turbo Replacement 2001 S60 2.4T

Good Evening All. Got my 01 S60 2.4T checked out by 2 different trusted mechanics to diagnose my car smoking a bluish/white color out of the exhaust. In addition, car was making a whistling/winding noise and getting horrible MPG. Both mechanics determined that the turbo was done and that the front o2 sensor may have been going bad. I'm looking to replace the turbo but have three questions.

1. Can I replace the turbo with the T5 turbo? One mechanic said he could do this and that the turbo was pulled of a slightly newer model meaning it could have a longer life span.

2. Should I replace it with a regular stock used turbo for the 2.4T?

3. Once the turbo is changed, what else should I have the mechanic look at and change to make sure I'm not getting haggled (oil, coolant, o2 sensor, clean throttle body?)

Thanks guys!

also check the pcv system - see how on youtube

the o2 sensor - the front one, you can remove it and test it with a multimeter and a flame to get either 1.0v or 1.5v. see youtube for a how to too. O2 sensors can be 'rebuild' by burning them for several minutes until they start showing voltage again.

also check the thermostat

Hey Blackguy_with_Volvo, I just bought an '01 S60 2.4T last week, and I seem to be having the same problem with the fuel economy... The first thing I figured it might have been was the fuel pump (which was recalled), and $900 later I'm still chugging down a half a tank of gas in 2 days worth of commuting, and the computer shows an average of 15.8 MPG. Is your mileage that bad? I'm starting to think My car might have the same problem, but I don't really notice any whistling sounds...

Would you guys recommend this 44-point inspection at a Volvo dealer to get to the bottom of this? Or are they just likely to take my money and tell me everything's ok... or some other line...?

If you go to Volvo, don't do the 40 points check, just ask them read the codes. Maybe you are lucky and it's just the front O2 sensor. But it could be several other things.

The mpg issues are sometime so hard and expensive to fix - because it's hard to pinpoint the cause and you keep replacing parts - I would return the car to it's seller. He possibly sold the car because he wasn't able to fix the mileage.

PCV valve, definately PCV, you can check this by taking off the oil fill cap when the car is running, if the sound goes away, PCV valve. You can replace the whole thing or order a replacement diaphram and clean out the housing really well, IT cost me $20 for my 2013 S60 T5, took about 45 minutes.
