Default Brake pad longevity experience

Hi, how long have you found that your brake pads are lasting, front and also rear?? Normally the fronts should wear twice as fast as rears , per Volvo, due in part to shifting of weight from rear to front when stopping. My experience over last 5 years has been just the opposite: 53,000 miles on car using brakes conservatively has resulted in recent second replacement of rear pads vs. front pads now need their first replacement.
Also, any forums that can advise me as to procedure for replacing pads myself, or any sources for good service manual?? Thanks for help, Steve

Hi,

Yes generally the fronts do most of the jobs and wear out before the rears do, but if different friction material was used on the rear pads, they may wear out faster than the fronts.

I was unable to locate a generic service manual for S60; you may have to get the factory manual or VIDA:

Or, you may be able to find one via eBay, etc...

Good luck,

JPN

On an S60; fronts should go before rears. Is this a shop recommendation or your own observation? Are these after-market pads?

My 04 has only 22,500 miles on it and it needs new pads and rotors. Sounds funny to me. Anyone else have any issues with premature brake wear?

Premature isn't really the problem I'm having. Mine just dust like crazy! I'm thinking of swapping them out for some ceramic pads. I know OEM equipment is generally lesser quality than you can buy aftermarket in most cases, but I thought on these super safe Volvos, it might be different. I mean, they are supposed to be a cut above the Big 3, IMO.......right?

Aftermarket brakes I've seen warp rotors and screeching brake noise all the time.(customer ending up paying twice for brakes since they cannot stand the brake noise level and vibrationfrom aftermarket brakes they ending up going back to OEM). The aftermarket padsmay be harder material and longer lastingthan OEMbut they warp and overheats therotorstwice asfast. I've notice on S60 AWD in 2004 actually rear wears out about the same as the front. But all brake wears depending on driving habits and conditions of the area that the vehicle located in. (Example: area uses high content on road salt they eat up rotors like crazy)

Volvo pads are dusty, period, end of discussion. Of course they'll stop you pretty quickly.

32k on mine and it looks like I still have half the break pad left. Rears don't look any worse than the fronts.
