Default Brake rotor size option

Hi All,
I need change my S60 (2005 AWD 2.5T) front brake rotors and pads. I am confusing how to choose the right size of rotor, my current rotor size is 286mm diameter. According to some information I got from websites, the other size (306mm) is for wider wheel size. My wheel is 17 inch width, it seems to be that the 286 rotor is bit smaller. My question is should I continually use 286mm rotor and change to bigger one (for example 306mm)?
Thanks,
Micror

I called the Volvo Parts dealer and he used VIN to determine the right rotor.
Or you could just measure yours.

If yours are 286mm, put 286mm rotors on. Not sure what the question is...

Micror,

the consideration on rotor size vs wheels works the other way around - if you have large rotors ie 300mm+ you can't put on the smaller wheels (say downsizing to 15s for snows). If you are interesting in moving to larger rotors for looks or better braking you'd need to replace the caliper brackets to those for the bigger rotors. SO as ES6T said, for maintenance, if you have 280s you replace with 280s, no need to overthink.
