Default Breather box in 2005 S60

Hi

I have S60 AWD and during the last 90K km service, I have been advised to change the breather box and it will cost me at AUD1.3K.
I do not have any mechanical nor engine background so pardon me for asking to many question at once.

I need info from anyone what should I do and what is the meanning of this breather box and what is potential problem that would happen if I did not change this.

Any other alternatives?

If this need to change, any info for local service to do this work with less spending?

Thanks

Probably the PCV system. Part of its job is to relieve any pressure in the engine. As the gases cool it condenses in a box and drains back into the oil pan. For various reasons it will get clogged up over time. The problem with just trying to clean the system is that the parts become brittle with age and heat from the engine. Some websites have entire pcv replacement kits that come with all the parts needed.

If it is the PCV system that is clogged, if left untreated it can lead to blown engine seals. If I were you, I would call around the various shops for a price quote, preferably one with good experience with imports.

As a last resort option, I've seen tuner cars with oil catch cans in place of a pcv. Not the best solution, and a bad idea if you plan to sell it in the future.

Hope some of the info helps.
