Default Buying Used...

Hi,
Just found this form and read several posts. Great info about certain repairs, how to's, and all kinds of advice. Very cool.

Wondering if you can help me... I'm looking to sell my 2005 Durango and get something that is a little more economical. Looked at newer cars (06-08) cars with all wheel drive and under 40K miles and they all seem way over priced. $12K for a Suzuki SX4 with 30K miles, come on, really?

Then I started looking at other options and there are several 2002 Volvo S60 all wheel drive cars for sale in my area. Most of them are in the 100K to 120K mile range. But then, Volvos are known for getting 200K+ miles.

SO... I am seriously considering an 02 S60 with, what I would consider to be, high miles. I'm looking for used car buying advice. What should I look for? Any indicators of issues/problems are considered a red flag?

What type of maintenance should I expect to do with a 2002 S60 after I buy it? Change fluids, timing belt, tune up, etc. I really want to by a 100K mile car and put another 100K on it

Thanks,
Doug

If you like the S60 avoid the '01 and 02 automatics, high failure rate.

Also avoid the early years AWD, again high failure rate. Your best bet is a '03+ S60 T5.

Yeah, I've been doing some research since my original post and found a lot of concern with 01 and 02 transmissions.

I did find an 03 near me, a little higher on the odometer (125K miles), but might be better in the long run to avoid the tranny problems. It's a 2.5T AWD, not the T5 that you are recommending... research will continue.

Thanks,
Doug

Doug,

be patient, avoid the AWD unless you really need it.

The S60 T5 is a sweet machine, plenty of power and can be tuned for so more
