When i shopped around for my 240, i looked at a few things. First of all, the engine. I looked for leaks from anywhere, such as the water pump. one 91 240 had a water pump leak. it couldnt hurt to ask what the service record for the car is. might show u what has been wrong with the car. also, defn check for oil leaks from anywhere. aside from looking over the engine, check the tranny for wear and what not. test drive the car and see how it handles and sounds, both engine and tranny. Check to make sure the clutch is in good working order. if this all checks out, you have the making for a good car.

Thanks, I purchased one back in November. It seems this board doesnt get a lot of use. I picked up a 91, with 190k, for 3 K, good condition, perfect body and interior, will need clutch soon, I may do it myself as shps want close to 600. I drive it daily at least 65 miles

Thanks

congrats on ur good find, my car has 167K and i got it for 5K at a dealer, it is in great condition, interior, exterior and drivetrain, so i am happy, plus its black with tan interior, which i like the most. i also noticed this board is sort of dormant, but i check it often. if you want to talk volvo or have any other questions, ill keep my eyes open.
happy driving!

Default Buying a used Volvo 240

Hello Volvo 240 enthusiasts,

I too am on the look out for a 240 DL sedan. I've seen them for many years and finally decided I'd like to own one. I already noted the 'what to look for when buying' but does anyone have any suggestions for the best features to look for? Or for that matter, what not to look for? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm going to be returning to school here very soon and need an older, reliable vehicle. I thought what better than a 240dl.

thanks

wow. i picked up my 89 with 171k miles for only 600 bucks. no rust---no bumps or any major issues. a ding in the door and missing front spoiler is about it. and the overdrive has mysteriously stopped working. but damn.no leaks anywhere in the engine bay either. no radio...but that's a minor inconvenience...

i guess i got a good deal,

Default RE: Buying a used Volvo 240

Rust,Rust and Rust this is the number 1 killer of 240s.Try to get maint history, oil changes, timeing belt replacments ex ex.Do you plan to do the upkept?Take a look into the oil cap, nice and clean? or black junk, put trans dip stick, nice and red? or dark brown?.Test drive, floor it, any funny noise ?How do the brakes feel, funny noises aka rotors.I just pick up and 89 245 for my son for 300 bucks, but it needed front brakes, blower motor, rear bushings. The guy was tryer of putting money,See want I mean.
