Default Can anyone with a manual check this for me?

MY mechanic says he can't begin to find out what is up with my car until I see what this message is for.

"Engine System Service Required"

It keeps showing up for awhile then going away for a few days.
I took it to autozone and it had a few possible issues, but I'm not sure.
I was freaked that it was the throttle (I bought this car from a dealer, not volvo so no ten year warranty) but I don't think that's it. I don't smell gas and there's no recall on my specific car for the throttle. 2001 S60 2.4T btw.

I did see some a recall that coincides with the autozone report. It said something was up with the fuel pump, that it may be damaged or loose. I think that could be the case since the message goes on and off. I could swear it comes on when I hit a bump or something.

Ideas? Can my mechanic easily check for this btw?

Not much a manual can do for you. If the "check engine" light is on, then you can pull the codes using the simple ODBII readers at Autozone or any other service place. If all you receive is a message, then you probably have to take it to a dealer since they can read codes from all the car's modules.

Recall 220 was issued for the fuel pump. Just search for RCMN-09V483-9234.pdf

I asked (and paid for) the following answer from a Volvo mechanic re:Engine System Service Required.

"This is caused by a faulty or dirty throttle. This can be repaired sometimes by cleaning the throttle and reloading with a software update. Or the throttle body may have to be replaced, the dealer can tell you exactly what needs to be done. only the dealer because they can read the software version in the throttle and also download new software.
If this issue isn't fixed it may cause reduce power and limited speed, the engine may also not start when the throttle completely fails."

He further states that to clean and reload S/W: $150
New throttle : $450
This assumes you go to Volvo for service.

My experience with a 2001 S60 T5, approx 140,000 mi. Engine service light (not check engine light) came on and I drove for a couple more days (my mechanic, not dealer could not figure it out when the service light came on) then I lost power and could only get about 10 mph. Ended up calling a tow truck and the dealer replaced the throttle. BTW, I tried to clean it first to no avail. Also I did not smell gas fumes or have any other signs of problems. Luckily I was under the warranty. Good Luck.
