Default Changed engine mounts, but still making noise, any ideas ?

I have a 2002 S60 that has been making a noise for a few weeks not, hard to explain but kind of a whirring cyclical rrrrrrrRRRRrrrrrrrRRRRrrrrrrRRRRrrrrrrRRRR type noise coming from where the belts are.

My upper engine mount was shot and a mechanic told me this was likely the cause of some of the noise my that lower front mount was also likely shot as well. I replaced both this weekend, and that cut down any engine vibration but not the noise.

I am also going to change my timing belt and water pump in the next couple of weekends, and am wondering if the noise is just the serpantine belt or a loose timing belt pully?. The car drives fine just makes this whirring type noise. Can old belts make this kind of noise ?

Any thoughts ?

Thanks,

Mark.

whirring is belt related or something spinning that is belt driven very likely.

mounts will just make like crack/thump noises and you will feel vibrations very likely.

How many miles? youll prob find its a pulley or something of the such.

Thanks, I am thinking that myself now. I replaced the serpentine belt and noticed the tensioner was a bit wobbly so I replaced that as well. The noise seems to be coming from the power steering pump pulley I believe, am going to check that out this weekend.

Oh, now i see you have 2 threads on this.

You should take the belt back off and check the alternator for play all directions and spin it by hand (note rotation) and see if there is drag or noise.

Should the serpentine belt tensioner pulley move at all ? I notice when the engine is running the pulley is kind of wobbly, should it be absolutely stationary ?

Thanks.

It going to move some do to diff. Tension while running but the best way to check is to remove the belt and spin it if it i rough while spining its bad. Also be carefull if its not ur t-belt tensioner making the noise
remove the serp. Belt completely and start the engine for a few seconds if noise still around belt area there somting going on in side the t-belt area. And no if u run the engine with out the serp. Belt for a bit wont damage the engine.

I brought the car into the local Volvo specialist and found out what the problem(s) are. First, the idler assembly was bad, they replaced this pretty cheaply ($185 parts and labor), which helped a lot, car has more pep, but still making some noise and this they say is due to the alternator, bad bearings. They quoted me $650 parts and labor ($400 for a rebuilt Bosch, $250 labor) but said it is not urgent.

Can't be that difficult to replace, I can't imagine any more tricky than a timing belt.

Can anyone recommend the best value replacement to get ? I usually buy from FCP groton but don't see alternators there.

Thanks.

Here's a couple of cheap deals on eBay, a lot cheaper than the standard Bosch models, can they be any good?

I am sure they will all work, but some, if not most will set a message, "electrical system failure" is there is no wire to signal back to the CEM. Vehicle will charge and run fine though.

Can you explain this further, why would the computer not recognize it if it is just a rebuilt version of the correct model alternator?
