Default Dash cup holder removal? / replacement?

Does anyone know how to remove the in-dash cup holder next to the stereo and replace it with OEM faceplate to eliminate it completely?
The wifey hates it, especially since it broke and wont stay shut.
I called the dealer and they said its not that simple to put a cover there, you have to replace a whole bunch of stuff????????
sounds fishy.
I would like to put a cover there and maybe had an insert to hold an ipod or cell phone?

I searched all the forums first and didnt find any instructions.
Thanks for your time.

All I can tell you is how to remove it.

If you look closely at the top and bottom of the panel it is in you will see tabs in the plastic. You will need a long Pick to lift the tabs. Then pull on it and it should slide out.
