Default Did my mechanic rip me off?

Hi There,

I have a 2001 Volvo S60 and I took it to the mechanic a couple of weeks ago. I had heard some squealing from the brakes so thought that was the signal to have my brake pads replaced.
After looking at the rear brakes, the mechanic told me that it was standard practice to replace the brake pads and rotors on "these types of vehicles". Is that actually true? I get the feeling he just replaced them to make me money. Its pretty sad if thats the case cause I've been going to them for 7 years and we are on a first name basis there. So I'm wondering if its really the case that pads and rotors are typically replaced at the same time in S60s or if its just a gimmick he told me to make some money.

Default RE: Did my mechanic rip me off?

I can't answer that question directly as I don't know the condition of the rotors (discs).

I have been subscribing to severalUS Volvo forums for a few years now and I have noticed that there is a tendency to advise members to change pads and discs at the same time. The usual reason given is that thediscs may have warped.

In the UK we approach the problem from a different direction. At the time of changing the pads we measure the thickness of the discs and check lateral runout. If they are within spec the discs are not changed.

On your car the minimum recommended thickness of the front discs is 23.0mm. When replacing pads the minimum recommended thickness is 23.8mm. If the vehicle is fitted with 16" wheels it is 25.0mm and 25.8mm respectively. The recommended minimum for therear discs is 10.0mm but 10.7mm if replacing the pads.

I suggest you ask your mechanic if he took thesemeasurements and did a runout check and go from there.

Thanks, I learned something new
I'll definitely keep it in mind next time I get new brake pads.

I have a total of around 400k miles in Volvos. In my experience, rotors on mine lasted about 100k or replaced on third brake job. Not warped, but just to thin to safely use.

A. Never buyaftermarket rotors Only OEM or specialized performance rotors
B. Never turn a rotor
C.Only change the rotors if they are near or below minimums.

You could request to get that measurements from the dealer. I love my dealer and request the specifics. Now that they know me they offer this type of information up front.
