Default DIM Instrument Cluster Issues

I've got a 2002 S60 T5 with 181k and now facing an instrumentcluster issue. The dash will intermittently cut out; completely lose power. All the backlights will go black and the gauges will go to zero. I can smack the glass in front of the gauges and it will come back on. I took it to a volvo dealership and they told me I needed an entirely new DIM for $850. I popped the DIM out this weekend and re-soldered the leads from the connnector to the board. This fixed the problem for a day, but now it's cutting out again.

Has anyone experienced this or does anyone have a fix for this? I'm not ready to put that kind of money into my car unless I absolutely have to.

Thanks
Jim

Try purchasing a used one off of ebay or through a salvage yard. I know I've seen them on ebay before.

Can you guarantee it's the DIM though? there's got to be an intermittent connection somewhere since smacking the glass can make it work. Is there any way to pull apart the DIM and reflow all the connectors?
