Discoloration on moulding

Discoloration on moulding
Hello,
Does anyone know what may cause the roof moulding strips on a white S60 get discolored? The discoloration looks like textured black smudges. I was told at the dealership that it is likely caused by the sun. In any event, any suggestions on how to clean/buff it out?
