Copped this 05 yesterday. Aside from needing new motor mounts and keeping my eye on a possible radiator hose leak, its in great shape. Any tips or heads up about this particular model?

lots of the problems were in earlier models but still from time to time people post up about issues - just scroll throught the S60 forum. For any used car aquisition, its a good idea to review the maintenance history and do some baseline maintenance where you are not sure of the service history. Start by finding your model's maintenance calendar to know what the factory service intervals are then I'd check the quality of all fluids. If you have a slow coolant leak, consider replacing the major hoses and doing a fresh water flush with new 50/50 coolant (see the owners manual for specs, but its likely that its using "blue" coolant ) - look around the radiator and overflow container for any signs of staining as well. Generally coolant drain fills should be done every 5 years. Next check the color of the transmission fluid - never a bad idea to do a drain fill with fresh fluid there. Volvo doesnt have a service interval here but most would agree doing a 100K freshing - some even advocate 50K intervals. Next see when the last time the brake fluid was flushed. This should be done every 2 years. You can also use a turkey baster to do a drain/fill for the power steering fluid via the reservoir (no wrenches required, just a quart of fluid). Plugs are due every 60K or so (again check the maintenance schedule) - use genuine Volvo if you can. triple iridium blah blah blah don't necessarily run better. Check/replace your intake air filter and cabin air filter. Check service interval for fuel filter. Invest $100 in a dealer/shop full safety inspection (or see if the seller has done this already) to see if your brakes and suspension etc is fit. next is to see when the timing belt (was done). Volvo 5 cylinder engines are due at 10 years/120K miles so the car should be on its second belt. Listen for any pulley noises - a bad pulley or idler on the accessory belt can lead to bad things happening like a torn accessory belt that whips into the timing belt... Typically this belt gets replaced during the timing belt service. Finally check for the health of the PCV system. Any whistling noises that go away when the dipstick is pulled up slightly when the engine is running? a simple test is to do a "rubber glove test" will let you know. Search Youtube for "PCV rubber glove test" for a how to.

This sounds like a lot and will be costly to have a shop do all this, so much of my guidance assumes you'd be doing this yourself if you have tools/skills. My point is to make sure your car has been fully maintained to factory standards. When in doubt, you should consider being proactive in baselining the maintainance.
