Help! S60 2.5T AWD won't shift out of park!
Hello! I've had a 2009 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD for about 9 months now and about 6 months in it started doing this. It won't shift out of park. Brake lights are fine. I turn it on, hold the brake as usual and try to put it in drive. Often times, it will go into drive like normal, but occasionally it will be stuck in park. The led inside the mechanism works fine. I was in chase bank at an ATM and turned it off and into park and when I started it and tried to put it in drive, it wouldn't move, no matter the force. The tow truck driver was able to unplug something towards the right of the engine bay and got it to shift just fine. Several garages and EVEN Volvo in Charleston, WV (about an hour from where I live) has replaced components regarding the shifter cable/plunger, etc, but it continues to have the problem. Does anyone know how to solve this? Or could I have Volvo replace my car? Or even, does anybody know what the tow truck driver unplugged so I could override the shifting mechanism? These might sound like dumb questions, but I have become desperate. I've worked on cars and motorcycles before, and have ever ran into a problem I couldn't fix or have fixed. I can't find the specs for the shifter cable / mechanism either. Any help? Please !
This happened to car. It's a easy fix the shifter has a small shaft that will fall out of place internally. When this happens the shaft can't lift the vertical safety rod up to take it out of park.
Gently pry the shifter base up around the shifter boot. It will pop up.
Grab the shifter **** and pull like heck upwards like a gorilla until it pops up. It's hard but it will come up and nothing will break.
Pull thE vertical rod out of the shifter which is the safety park release shaft that engages and disengages.
Reinstall items.
You don't have the shifter safety but do have the brake safety.
