Smile Instrument Panel Issues

Hi,

I just bought my son a 2002 S60 (non-Turbo). Just yesterday, the instrumentation panel went blank (Speedometer, Tac, Mileage, turn signals, etc..). Nothing was showing but everything was functional - the turn signals were working fine with no issues whatsoever. However, this morning, when I turned the car on, everything in the instrument panel was working fine again and everything was showing as it should until later on this afternoon where it disappeared again. Has this happened to anyone and what was the cause of it? Is this a short, a fuse malfunction type issue or is it an indication that the Instrument panel is on its way out? Please help!!

Regards,
Tristans Volvo

It is a known problem. What generally happens is the PCB loosens and no longer makes contact with the chip. You can have the contacts re-fluxed using a hot air machine, or buy a recondition unit.

Thank you Mr. Higgins for the response and the video - very helpful. Your explanation makes sense. Do you know if the chip can be saudered into place? I don't have access to a hot air machine but I may have access to a saudering unit. Also, do you know who may be in a position to do this type of refluxing if I choose to have someone do it? Are there people out there who perform this type of work for a reasonable cost? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

There have been successes by re-soldering the contacts.
Xemodex (http://xemodex.com/xemodex_011.htm) will manufacture the D.M. for a price.
Also there BBA Reman (2002 S60 Volvo Instrument Cluster Repair Service 02 | eBay)

Mr. Higgins,

Thank you again for the response and the information. I decided to replace the instrument cluster instead of trying to sauder the connections. I found one in a local auto recycling yard for $100. Just installed it and seems to be working fine. (It had about 3k more on the odometer than my vehicle did so it worked out okay). Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

or I did this since i live in USA but there are also UK places.
I paid 200 to have mine fixed after I shiped it out. Popping it out was very easy!

actually you can easily send out your cluster to get repaired for under $200. I just did it. Go to Ebay and lookup seller euro-electric. They give you easy instructions on how to pop out your panel, mail it to them and they ship it back fixed 1 2 3. Dont do like I did and wait for years and trying everything under the sun.

There are other sellers that seem more expensive out there.
or can search.
"VOLVO INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REPAIR". If you dont want to use ebay
you can just call them. 866 281 2414.

No I dont work there i just used their service and boy I wish i knew about it earlier
