Default Just Bought 2016 V60 T5 Platinum Need Advice

Just bought a 2016 V60 T5 Platinum with 48K miles. I live in Ohio, but flew down to the Hilton Head area to purchase the car because it was a low mileage, one owner southern car with a clean CARFAX, and was in very nice cosmetic and mechanical condition.

I bought the car from a Ford/Lincoln dealer who took the car in on trade, so obviously this is not a CPO situation. I have only put about 1000 miles on the car since purchase, so the current mileage is still below 50K.

Anyway, I just stumbled onto this whole horror story about the piston ring/oil consumption problem on 4 cylinder and 5 cylinder engines in the the V60/S60/XC60 models of this period. BTW, this is my first ever Volvo and so far I really like the car.

So my question is, where do I go from here? What are my options? How do I determine if my vehicle has the defective piston ring design, or if it got the updated rings? Has there been a recall? What is the status of the class action lawsuit? What about all of the technical journals I’m finding online? What about the extended engine warranty I’ve read about?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I’m quite concerned that the beautiful vehicle that I was so happy to acquire just a month ago might actually have a ticking time bomb under the hood.

Sorry for such a lengthy first post. And thank you in advance for any and all input, instruction and advice that might be offered.

Volvo has a list of the serial numbers of the cars affected with the piston/ring problem. (and I have seen some lists posted here and on swedespeed)

If your car is on that list and the replacement piston work was done (under warranty) any Volvo dealer should be able to pull up that history.

So I would pay a visit to your local dealer - and perhaps they can confirm or allay your fears.

Default Thank you

I appreciate the advice. I’ll be making a visit to my local Volvo dealer tomorrow. I’ll report back with what I find out.

Default Found The Engine Number

Found the engine number. Unfortunately for me the engine number is 1276912, well in front of the factory fix number of 1501327.

Went to my local Volvo dealer yesterday. They told me the in service date for the car was in late July of 2016, so I’m covered under the extended warranty until late July of this year. They scheduled me for the oil consumption test, which will start next Wednesday. I guess we’ll see what the testing shows and then evaluate the options available going forward.

Any suggestions based on this new info would be appreciated. Thanks again to all who have contributed so far!

You will need to "use oil" during the test. (if you want new free pistons) Not sure how you can make some of the oil disappear -

Default Have Begun The Oil Consumption Test Process

So, I had the initial appointment where they did the oil and filter change. Before doing that they looked for any oil leaks and did not find anything. I now drive the car a minimum of 620 miles or a maximum of 800 miles, then return the car to dealership so they can then determine the precise amount of oil used per mile and make a determination about the status of the engine/piston rings. That’s my understanding of the process so far. Am I missing anything?
