Default Just got 04 S60 2.4 -- Preventive Maintenance Needs?

March 1st we bought a 2004 S60 2.4 with manual trans with 52,500 miles at a used car dealer for our daughter for $8,900......they as usual had gotten the vehicle from a local auto auction. The dealer had replaced the front brakes and a couple weeks later I took the vehicle to an independent Volvo shop to diagnose the metal-on-metal I started hearing (didn't know if it was coming from the timing belt or what.......they confirmed it was both the power steering pump and alternator which would eventually fail. They wanted $1500 to replace both so I did it myself with parts from AdvanceAutoParts and saved $900. I also changed the oil over to Mobil 1 and Volvo oil filter and put new tires on. I read the thread on timing belts so it appears that doesn't need replacing for another couple years (70,000 miles or 7 years). Likewise, assume serpentine belt should be done same schedule (70,000 miles or 7 years)? But are there any other significant preventive maintenance items that should be done on this vehicle since I don't know its maintenance history? Flush cooling system? The vehicle looks and runs great but any PM advice would be appreciated from you Volvo experts.

I just read your detailed PM summary at the link........extraordinary! Appreciate the referral to your very thorough write-up. In our case, of course, the vehicle only has 52,500 miles on it so many of these items are down the pike for us. I do have a question, however, about our manual trans. When I push the clutch in to shift, and particularly when I push the clutch in fairly fast, I hear a slight "clink" sound. Do you have any thoughts what that indicates? Next week I'm taking the vehicle to our new independent mechanic to have the manual trans checked out.......he hasn't worked on this vehicle yet. He's originally from Sweden and worked on Volvos there so has excellent expertise. When we bought the vehicle on March 1st, the used car dealer provided a six months drive train warranty that includes the trans. But I think something has to totally fail before the warranty will cover the repair.

re the noise .... have you checked your engine mounts?

Take a look at the parts on ipd or fcp groton and you can check them yourself.

I'll check the engine mounts when my daughter comes home for a visit next week.......guess I didn't think, however, that the engine mounts would make the "clink" noise when the clutch is pushed in.
