Default Keyless entry remote question

I have an 04 S60 and it didn't come with the remote. Was at the volvo dealership and the guy told me I can't buy a used remote due to specific programming etc. Is this true? I don't feel like paying 300 buck for the key remote that the 04 requires. Wanted to go the Ebay route but don't wanna waste my money.
And if so, anyone know if the 2003 model remotes work for the 04? Seems like the 04's and up only have the remote with the key in it and the earlier models have the plain remotes.

My 04 S60 has two remotes with keys in it but only one can open - lock the car and start it. Other one can open and lock but can't start it. Dealership asks $ 160 to program it. So i think even if you find right remote you have to program it.

If you wish to add a key, remote, or a remote key to your car, you must have a key code. A used remote will work if the key code is included. The code is not printed on the key or remote and cannot be retrieved from any of the numbers on the key or remote. The code is programmed to the car through a software download at the dealership.

That code the guy above me is describing is actually printed on the plastic container the key remotes come in.
Ebay remotes are only good for the plastic housing.UNLESS THEY COME IN THE FACTORY PLASTIC CONTAINER.It has a bar code and about 3-4 different series of numbers printed NEXT to the bar code.Techs need that number to correctly program the remote to the vehicle. And each remote has a different number.
It cost so much because your payin for the software itself and since they plug the vehicle in to VIDA that is a 1 hour shop charge. And also the price of the remote.

Thanks, yea gonna be hard to find that. Anyone here have a remote with the package you'd like to sell??????? Man I don't feel like payin for one from the dealer. They told me for the valet key remote it's 160 and for the master key remote its like 300. All the master key does is lock the glove box and unlock the trunk if it's locked from the inside. I don't need to lock my glove box and if the trunk is locked then I'll just unlock it from inside the car.....so what's the point of even having a master key?!
Am I missing something cuz I'm just gonna get the valet one instead if this is the case.

I dont know why they told you the valet is cheaper.I could have sworn they were the same price.Anyway, the Valet and the Master both take a download of software and an hour download time for the the shop.
