Default Limp home mode.....

Greetings,

I have a 2001 S60 T5........The car has gone into limp home mode or "reduced power" mode several times in the last two days. The code that it's throwing is P0121, which is TPS/Pedal Position Sensor A CKT Range/Perf.

My question is, can I change out this sensor or does the whole throttle body have to be changed out? The dealership parts department is telling me the whole throttle body has to be replaced and the sensor cannot just be replaced. Is this true?

Can I somehow clean this sensor?

Is there a factory warranty recall on these? They did indicate a high failure rate of the throttle bodies on this model and era of Volvo.

Can I somehow prevent "reduced power" mode from occuring to get me by until I can get it to the dealership or replace it myself?

Thanks in advance for any input,

Greg

Yes, your ETM is bad and needs replaced. This is warranted for 10 years/200,000 miles. However they still use the same junk part that will go bad again. You should get the ETM software updated to prevent the limp home mode. After that, you will have very rough running and stalling but you'll still be able to drive. And no, there is nothing that can be done to the innards of the factory ETM.

What I did was remove mine and send it to Xemodex in Canada where they rebuild them with different technology. Here's more info on that:

I'm somewhat handy with wrenches and such so it wasn't too hard of a job. Any more questions, ask away.
