Default Locked Outside

Greetings!

Many pardons if this issue has been answered already. I browsed this forum and I haven't stumbled upon an entry related to mine so here goes.

I've had my s60 for a couple of months now and I've never encountered this issue until today.

When I got home, I turned the lights, radio, and the air conditioning off while still leaving the engine on so as to cool my vehicle down. I then got out of the vehicle and closed the door. After around a minute, I turned around and tried to open my door but it was locked. Take note that the engine is still running and nobody else was inside the vehicle.

Good thing though that I was at home already so I just got the spare key and was able to get in the vehicle momentarily. I then tried locking the doors while they were open but they automatically unlocked themselves after a second or so.

I do not understand as to what just happened. I am worrying that this might happen again while I am out and what kind of hassle such would entail.

Thanks much.

Did you have the doors locked before you got out? On my car, if you have the doors locked and then unlock the doors and don't open at least one within 2 minutes, it relocks itself so that you don't accidentally leave the car unlocked. I wonder if it's not seeing the door as being opened since it was "unlocked" at the same time with interior door handle (if it was).

This is normal operation to keep you from locking your keys in the car.

Whenever I get out of my car with the engine running, I roll one of the windows down partway so I can reach in and open the car if it locks on me. Pain in the butt, but a lot easier than the alternatives.

Yeah, this was why I was surprised as to my being locked outside of my car (since there is that normal operation).

No, it was the second instance that day that I got out of the vehicle without turning the engine off. The first time was only a few minutes before the incident so when I got in, I didn't bother locking it anymore.

I wonder if it's not seeing the door as being opened since it was "unlocked" at the same time with interior door handle (if it was).
If such was the case, then what would be the problem? Or are these flukes normal?

Yeah, I understand. But I would want to know the reason behind such occurrence.

Thanks so much for the reply. I appreciate it greatly.
