Default Loud Noise in Wet Driving Conditions

Maybe someone can help me here. I drive a 2002 S60 AWD. When driving in extreme moisture conditions (ie: heavy downpour or large amounts of standing water on road), the car makes a very loud sqealing/howling noise from the front of the car. This causes no performance problems or driveability issues but is very annoying and embarassing. It sounds like the car is coming apart. If anyone has experienced this or knows what might be causingI wouldbe greatful toknow. Thanks for the help.

It could be water splashing up and getting on the serpentine belt that drives the alternator, AC, etc. Although I have never heard that type of noise when driving my S60 is severely wet conditions.

There is a known issue that causes this. As I recall, during raining, the exhaust system is cooled in such a way thatan axle rubs on an exhaust bracket. Something like that. If I remember right, the fix was to modify or replace a bracket. Do a search over at Volvospeed. That is where Ihave seen it.

I had the same issue and it was the muffler rubbing against the drive shaft. To make sure, when the car is high up on a jack, lookat the top partof the muffler. The shaft leaves a rounded mark on the muffler. There are spacers, or larger muffler hangers that keepthe muffler away from shaft. In my case, atthe cornermechanic shop, they just bend the muffler hangers a bitand itworked. Good luck.

Default Replaced hangers and still having issue

Hi, was wondering if anyone can post pictures of this fix. I’ve replaced the hangers and it helped a little but it is still grinding.

Thank you.

Maybe, also, check the drivetrain parts like the transfer case and differential for leaks or water damage. Also, inspect the exhaust system for any signs of rubbing against other parts.
