if its smoking and consuming oil, that suggests a piston ring problem. If a diesel just smokes then its running rich. How far do you go before needing to add a quart of motor oil?

It could be worn-out piston rings or valve stem seals that are letting oil get into the engine, leading to smoke.
Plus, the turbocharger or the turbo oil seals could also be culprits. A malfunctioning turbo can cause both smoke from the exhaust and oil consumption.
