Mass Air Meter/Sensor Cleaning (S60R)
Has anyone tried to clean this vice replacing? I just took my S60R to the service center because theengine was running rough and bucking a bit. They said I need to replace the Mass Airflow Sensor but it goes for about $800 here ($250 in the states via internet). The car is running so poorly that I really dont want to take it for the daily commute. To get the vehicle running decently temporarily (until the part arrives from the states), I am debating whether to try and remove and clean.Read onlineabout others doingthis with success but neversaw any of these reports on a Volvo. Anyone tried this before? Thanks for any help.

The MAF sensor is usually easy to replace...better off to buy the part and install yourself. Don't worry about aftermarket MAF's for the R as the OEM version handles itself quite well. You might also check your filter out, if your running like a K&N Filter or BMC Filter take it out clean it out and let it dry over night before "lightly applying" the oil recharge back to it. Too much oil can cause the MAF sensor to go out, I would suggest cleaning your MAF with some rubbing alcohol as a degreaser.

There is a new cleaner on the market now formulated especially for the MAF. I bought a can at NAPA but since I am sitting in a hotel room in New Jersey I am not able to get to the garage to give you the name of the manufacturer. It does work well and is formulated to not harm the plastics of the MAF. I cleaned the MAF on one of my other autos and the increase in MPG was interesting!
