Default Air Mass Meter Cleaning?

My 1990 240DL runs good, but fuel mileage is suffering somewhat and I think the Air Mass Meter might be the culprit. From all indications the previous owner never did much maintenance on the car, as the air filter was severely neglected, which in turn has caused a black sooty film to form on the wire mesh of the air mass meter opening. The sensor wire on the inside of the air mass meter has the appearance of a dull copper wire.

I see that a company call CRC makes a product called MAF cleaner that is supposed to be safe to use on mass air meter wires and is safe on plastics as well.

Since the car is starting, running and idling good, would it be worth it to try a can of this MAF cleaner? Has anyone ever cleaned their mass air meter with success?

I used it on my 850. It is not to strong so is safe for MAF and plastic around.

Anyone else tried the MAF cleaner with success? Did it improve mileage or run quality?

On an older car, I'd sooner replace the O2 sensor if looking for improved mileage. They have a service life of 80-100k kms and NEVER get replaced although they should.

Regards, Andrew.
