Default New alternator, engine now stalls

Hello,

I have a 2001 S60 Base model. I put in a new rebuilt Bosch alternator from FCP Euro because the original one was whining progressively worse.

The job went smoothly. The battery with the car off reads 11.9V. With the car idling it reads 13.3 to 13.4V. With headlights and fan on at idle it reads 13.3V.

But when I press the accelerator the engine invariably stalls unless I pump it. And if I let the engine idle for half a minute, it will stall on its own. If I elevate the rpm, it will stall.

The battery terminals are good and are clean. There are no warning lights on regarding the electrical system. When I reattached the battery cable after doing the work, I first moved the ignition switch to the second position (one up from Off).

Does anyone have any idea what to look for?

If it's a turbo with the plastic tube over the top of the engine that you had to move to get the alternator out - (non turbos don't have that tube) you have an air leak where that was not reinstalled properly.

Or, either turbo or not the throttle module is known to fail (on a 2001) - have you scanned for any codes in all the control units? How old is your throttle module?

It's the Base, non-Turbo model. I didn't do any scanning. I can try that tomorrow, weather permitting. There was no problem like this before the new alternator.

To replace the alternator I would guess you moved the power steering pump, The engine temp sensor wire is on the thermostat housing close to there - Throttle module and intake is on the other side of the engine on a non - turbo, so I would doubt that you touched anything over there.

I see that Bosch requires a battery voltage of 12.6V fully charged. Mine might not meet that requirement. I will fully charge the battery and then see what happens.
