Question New member question regarding messages

Hi everybody
I recently bought a 2003 S60 (non-turbo manual) and have not found any manuals or online help so far so here is my question:
1. There is a message screen in left side of dashboard which occasionally informs me that I have no messages! What messages am I supposed to get there and from who?
2. Same screen some times informs me that I am using 8.7 L/100 km. It seems to be constantly at the same number (8.7) which I assume can not be right. Is something wrong?
3. How do you change the type of messages you get? (rotate between fuel consumption and other messages) Is there a control somewhere?
thanks a lot in advance.
I should add I was Jeep owner before so this is quite a different type of ride.
thanks in advance
J

I have 2012, but it should be similar.
go to my car and set to US not metric and the L/KM will be mpg.
the messages are "maintenance is due" or other.
mine has a button on the end of the turn signal stalk that you can read/close the message.

1. From the car. Open the driver's door and it will say Driver's door open. It warns of bulb failure, engine service needed, maintenance due, etc. The US version of the Volvo site has owner's manuals available online.
2. No. I wouldn't rely on the real time fuel mileage calculation.
3. Rotate the dial in the stalk.

Thanks guys for the replies. After some experiments with stalk it turned out that there is an average value and an instantaneous value. And it can even be turned off. This is a very civilized car I should say.

Yes. Until something goes bad... then it's like Attila the Hun vs Bank Account. I bought my 2005 S60 2.5T AWD mid-september from being a Dodge/Chevy/Honda guy. I'm looking at two rear hubs as my next expense. Sounds like I'm running mudders on the back. I still have to chem flush the cooling system and put in the waterpump/timing kit. A definite tinkerers car. Reminds me of my buddy's father who would fiddle with valve slugs and every 3 months adjust the valves on his VW diesels (80's) (very **** retentive person).
